thing for amp to be off when you kill it

so i just got 2 12'' subs and a 400w jensen amp for my 99 cherokee (yeah not the best but its something). either way, first time doing audio stuff besides putting my deck in..deck is a kenwood kdc-x492..so previous owner of the amp totally ghetto rigged the thing that shuts off the amp so you dont drain your wire. i want to wire it right to my deck and i crimped and used bullet connectors to the wire on the deck that says remote wire or something like that and i thought that was it but its not working. everything else is plugged in but i dont know which wire to use now, is this wrong?

remote wire on headunit (mine was blue) to your amp remote wire in (commly labeled REM) power to power, ground to ground. rca's to headunit

wait you have to ground the REM? i just crimped the bullet connectors and put it to the REM..previous owner ghetto rigged a 2" wire i had to touch to the exposed power wires to turn the amp on..yeah thats why im trying to rig it up right

aight just tried it again and its not working..ill try to find my kenwood manual but got a feeling it got thrown out..might just say eff it and wire up a switch
