There's hope for dead AGM Batteries...

Something I thought that you guys may or may not know...

An AGM battery has the ability to discharge much lower than a standard battery. DON'T THROW IT OUT!!! However, recharging it with a regular battery charger may be impossible. I actually thought my Yellow Top Optima was a goner until I learned about this issue from Optima customer service.

To charge a completely dead AGM battery with a regular charger is quite simple. What you need to do is hook it up in parallel with another battery, that is charged, with jumper cables. Then charge both batteries like normal. After a couple hours or so, the charged battery can be removed and the charger can take over on its on charging the dead AGM.

So, before you think its a goner because it won't take a charge, try this first.

I would not ever suggest hooking a deepcycle sealed agm battery to a standard charger, I did that one time and dozed off on the couch, went back out about an hour later to find the battery venting and ruined because a standard charger is not a agm smart charger and has no clue when to stop, I'm amazed optima said to do that!

Oh whatever. I was not referring to a charger from 1980. And most batteries, agm or not are sealed anyway nowadays.

wow I was talking about a standard lead acid battery charger not from the 80's and obviously you don't know d*ck about battery's because only a sealed agm battery is sealed go flip a regular battery on it's side and let me know how it goes!

Quit making sh*t some f'n complicated. I did a simple search on the internet and verified what I posted. You should research some sh*t before dumping on my thread.

Yeah, you definitely need to use an intelli-charger that is made for AGM batts or has an AGM selector. It'll stop charging at 15V, whereas a normal charger will keep going and going and run too high of a voltage to your AGM batt.

The point was to bring the AGM back from the dead, not an ideal way to charge it I know. It was something to try if you didn't have c-tek or the sort before you went and trashed your battery.

simple search and not real exp is what your spouting, I have dealt with optima over the phone and ran them for the past 5yrs and have also researched these, most likely much further then you! What you are doing is giving advice that will most likely ruin someones battery. I'm not dumping on your thread I'm keeping YOU from causing damage to some other noobs system with your half*ss in-correct info!

Oh go argue with someone who wants to hear your lip.

I did this to my red top. It had been sitting literally for a few years and I tested it. It read 4.x volts w/ 0 cca. Hooked jumper cables to another battery and charger to the good battery. Put it on a slow charge for maybe a few hrs. Now the red top is under my hood and starts my truck everyday

Imagine that, it worked with no casualties:rolleyes:

The reason t works is because a standard charger won't charge a battery that reads too dead. So hooking it up to another battery tricks the charger. It's not rocket science guys. And as long as you don't leave it hooked for hrs at a time unattended then your batts will be fine

Right, I get that. I'm just saying that using an AGM charger is the smart way to do it, since I have had overcharging issues with "normal" chargers during the "topping off" stage, keeping the voltage at 16V or so for a while.
