Heading out around 2:30 today to get the welding done and have my idler pulley near the AC-alt trued up so I can properly use that with a longer belt for better belt wrap //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Pics later

Alright, got some welding done today. Got 2 main supports welded across the car near the sunroof to then weld smaller supports upto the metal track of the sunroof to hold it in place instead of flapping in the wind with teh dbz..

Before..how luxurious..

Teh metal..

Then the fun began, we got the first main support made up and welded in and then the 2nd one welded in. It came time to weld the first small support onto the track of the sunroof, so we got the small piece welded onto the main support. Then we saw that it was welded a bit further away from the sunroof track than we'd like so we tried pushing it/hitting it to bend back a bit but didnt budge...so I just so happened to have a clamp in my car and we used that to pull the smaller piece where it should be and welded it in position.

Everything seemed to be just fine but about a minute after taking the clamp off (about to weld the 2nd small piece onto another part of the track) we hear a snap, crackle, pop and notice the sunroof's glass just spider-cracked. To say the least I was confused for a few minutes on wtf was going on but soon realized the piece we welded while it was clamped had pulled the frame of the sunroof's glass inward, putting a butt-load of pressure on the glass and it cracked //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

But im actually not that bummed about it, we cut that piece off and got some duct tape on the glass stat. I'll be going to the junkyard to grab another sunroof glass-piece (held in by 6 screws and can be taken out in like 2 minutes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif) through a hopefully free barter with the junkyard in exchange for all the saturn parts ive taken out and will never use again..if not, it'll probably just be really cheap.

So, in short...the glass cracked after a chunk of work was done and he'll have the alternator idler pulley trued up the next visit along with the welding done (hopefully) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Some pics after the sunroof was taken out..

There was a lot of foam holding that bish in though..

The supports..

The side walls of the car's main supports were pretty thin and the welds ate through it a couple times so weld had to be globbed-on to fill everything back up..

More as it happens..

Welding that plate to sheet metal can be a bisch sometimes. I just try to get everything as clean as possible, then with my welder (Lincoln 135) I set my heat to the second setting, wire speed just under 4, then I flow some tacks through the sheet metal, and then work the puddle back and forth off of the plate.

Yea, he first started using a smaller welder but then brought out a tank of a welder...it was a big'n

Anytime that my wife says I'm doing some crazy stuff to my car I just show her these picks. Shuts her up every time:hilariou://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/hilarious.gif.02a037aad04aa96f19982b298a3d70a8.gif:hilariou:

I'm looking forward to seeing some BIG POWER in this Beast;)

Doug

if you are/were having issues with welds blowing through the sheet metal, use a Backer bar....we had one, it was 1/4 inch solid brass. and we could not weld to it per-se....so there

and are you sure that it didnt crack the glas from the heat?

Not too sure how it would work or what a backer bar is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif I dont do the welding //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

And im 99% positive the heat didnt cause the glass failure, the amount of force the piece took to bend into place for the weld was quite a bit and im almost positive the force of it trying to pull back put the pressure on the frame and then the frame pushed into the glass and eventually cracked (the cracking happened when nothing was going on, no heat etc. from welding going on)

But it's all good...I gathered up all the pieces of my car that Ive taken out and hope to simply trade the junkyard guys all my stuff for a new sunroof glass piece and replacing it will take 4-5 minutes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
