I've got a guy here at my school who has a truck similiar to what you described. He "built a box" out of 1/2" oak, and "cut a hole in it for a port." He grounded his amp by cutting the insulation off of the wire and wrapping the bare wire around the bottom of his seat.

Obviously, one of the resons for this kind of stupidity is they want something, anything in there to start to bang away with little money and no research.
