The Official Type R Thread

The M1005 will only give you approx 650 watts when wired to 2 ohm.
that being said, a sealed type R is a waste of a woofer... they don't really like it.
With all do respect, the Type R's are rated 500 watts RMS. Despite the fact that most everyone here, including myself, may agree that more power may make a Type R happier, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIIIIIIIGHLY doubt those folks at Alpine underrated the woofer to such a low point that actually feeding it its suggested RMS power would be "too low." I have a pair of Type R's, and I plan to feed 500 RMS to each. I'm sure they will sound great, because I've heard them. Then again, I'm compenstating by building the box quite a bit bigger. But the point still lies, saying 650 RMS to a woofer "rated" 500 RMS (but proven to handle more) won't satisfy that woofer is ridiculous.

Didn't say 650 watts wasn't "enough"? I've gotten satisfactory results from much less power... just depends on the box.

They handle much more, but don't "require" anything... they are still pretty effeciant.

On that note... ratings mean 0, its all about what the woofer (or ANYTHING) actually DOES, not what the people who made it SAYS it does.

I understand completely what you are saying. But what I'm trying to get across to you is, with a company such as Alpine, if they rate their woofers at 500 RMS, then I highly doubt it would take 1,000 RMS to get them to sound good. See what I'm saying? You use the rated RMS as a guide, so no... they DO mean something. They act as a guide, simple as that. Bottom line is, for a woofer such as the Type R rated 500 RMS, I wouldn't buy the Type R thinking OMG, LYK I ONLY HAV LYK UH 800 WATTZ TO SEND TO IT?! OMG I NEED A NEW AMP!!!121

Letsnot forget that alpine has a team of engineers that work on for months to desing this woofer. Sure they probably give a safty factor of 100-200 watts but still 500 will make it sound good. I would trust a team of engineers that MADE this woofer over a couple of 20 year olds saying put 1000 watts to it to sound good.

some woofs are rated by what amp they will match with... example would be a woof rated for 1000 watts, but it only handles approx 500 actual watts RMS. They know the woof will be matched with an amp that puts out 1000 watts, they know it will have impedence rise/voltage drop...and all your getting is about 500 watts. They test the woof on a "1000" watt amp and call it a day.

Some woofs are rated per what they actually handle... alpine is one of these, so is JL. "wow this type R handles my bx1500d like nothing!!!" thats because you arent getting 1500 watts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. I believe that it where the "max" rating on the type R comes from, if you do decide to get a "1500" watt amp the type R will handle it fine, in most applications it can handle up to 1000 actual watts without much trouble... and a majority of "1500" watters will never give you more than that when run under "rec'd" specs. 500 actual watts is what the type R will handle in dam near any enclosure forever. Thats how woofs are *supposed* to be rated.

Your right, its only a guide... but with most companies its very vague... to the average guy, what does 500 RMS, 1500 max mean??? Should I match it up with a 500 watt amp, or a 1500 watt amp!?!? The rating itself is useless, you just have to get the woofer in a box and see what happens..

if you don't clip it... the R 12 will handle 1000 watts like nuttin //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

No woofer "requires" any amount of power...

Just because I heard a couple people say it doesnt do the 1000W RMS @ 2OHM I will take mine in for testing on tuesday/wednesday, and scan thier reports, see who's talkin shit, and see who isnt.

I beleive it does between 900-1000W, Ive had Alpine amps for a long time, and all have put out atleast thier rated wattage.

custel or whatever says 850W atleast, which would be more beleivable than 650W... but none the less, I still stick with the 900W +

Any betters?

Exacty, they are meant to stand twice the RMS for a long period of time. Sure they give you a safty or everyone would be sueing Alipne for their sub being blown but there surly arent meant for double the RMS,

Anyone that hooks thier subs up 2x thier RMS rated wattage would be paying attention to how the sub acted... and turn it down if need be...

Its not like they wire up the sub, full gain, and crank thier head unit...

i dont know what m1005 your talking about

heres my friends test sheet we have it wired at 2 ohms, and on the amp it display's a 14.4-14.3 idle voltage

UNDER RATE THE WOOFERS LESS PEOPLE GIVING THEM ALOT OF JUICE

bada bing

give them a shit ton of power if you wanna hear what they can do

boosting the subs frequencey response in a properly tuned box with the proper size vent will boost the power handling up quite a bit--->

-or--the sub is louder with less watts, while its moving less

so less movement louder volume allows for a good increase in power handling, and i cant stress enough how the port needs to be the proper size,

example, lets say the port is 4" wide by 13.5 inches tall- compared to 3.75" wide by 13.5 inches tall, just that 1/4 of an inch can easilly make the sub sound like complete shit even if the vent is tuned 100% perfect the difference in the SQ is unbelievable
