I consider there being two 'excursion wars' going on. One is waged by many of the manufacturers, to claim king of the hill. The other one, is waged on the boards by people who do not fully grasp the situation, but still trying to argue back and forth about the importance of cone excursion.
In some situations, cone excursion (xmax) means very little. In some situations, its a very dominant spec. Compare two subs for output in sealed enclosures, then come tell me how little excursion means.
SPL competitions have created so many confused experts its staggering to me sometimes. People see a sub with relatively small xmax capability post up massive SPL numbers and viola, they start telling everyone on the boards that obviously xmax means very little to SPL potential. Forget that he is using a professional setup as his example, that only plays a single note burp, very near tuning where excursion is minimalized and thermal power handling becomes the dominant factor, for relatively short periods of time. Nope, forget all that, clearly that TermLab score proves the overgeneralization that xmax means very little to SPL potential.
Come on guys. If you know better, and I suspect you do, validate your comments with some onformation. Otherwise you only look half informed.
