The Great 15" Challenge

What if a sub gets blown during these spl tests?
i lol'd

im sure hes not an idiot and wont blow someone elses sub for testing purposes.

but i don't understand why a company would decline, if they say they designed a SPL oriented sub why wouldnt a company stand behind their product.

but i can see the other side of it if it performs poorly that might actually hurt the companys.

x2 From the looks of the line up though all of these subs should be good to go being brand new.

so why not just build one slot ported box built to specs for each sub and test it like that? kina seems like the best way to see what sub will preform best in the right application compared to boxes that might work best for one sub but not the other...

FI prob dosent want to do the test becasue It would be a fair test.. In the Great 12" challenge FI was getting nut hugged the whole time....

I Dont blame IA for not wanting to either... The DP would blow on the SPL burps... If not on the SPL then most likely on the Bassrace test... Subs dont like power...

right now I have 6 boxes in the works. Im testing about 20 subs roughly. I cant afford 20 boxes sorry

I figure if I put each sub in all 6 boxes. and just take the best box scores for each that would work fine.

You don't have to build 20 different boxes to test all in there optimum enclosure. You could build the largest box any of the subs would need. Test from the largest needed enclosure size first. Add blocks to decrease airspace as the enclosure size decreased. Instead of a slot port, use round, even if it sticks out of the enclosure. Start with the longest port legnth needed, shorten the tube from there. It'd be a lot of work, but would give more accurate head 2 head results and eliminate any unintended handicaps.

I still got some work to do and decide on but I may end up with something like this.

15” Heads-up Challenge
Proposal – Collect 15” Dual 2ohm models from several companies to do a variety of tests to compare the subwoofers.

Testing Setup

2000 Toyota 4runner

250amp EA alt

DD Z2lv or RD D9s

6 Stinger SPV70s

Boxes – Nine different boxes will be built (all 1.5” mdf)

•3 Bassrace Boxes

•3 Spl Boxes

•3 Daily Boxes

Tests-

• 30 second bassrace average (all subs will be on the same song which is not appointed yet)

• Spl burp peak score

• Daily will be tested by ear, this is obviously an opinionated decision but we will try and do the best we can in this case.

Scores-

Bassrace and SPL peak will be held on a Termlab mic, which I have two in my possession.

Boxes will be built by Mike Strass, a well respected box builder in the greater Chicago area.

AS of right now RD has confirmed testing several of their 15"s waiting on several other companies including DC, Cascade Designs, Sundown, and Others.

If you are a subwoofer company and would like to be involved please PM me.
no hes not. we don't like his blackass

how can you know the spl potential w/o pushing it close to it's limits.
well if he used the same power on each sub after the test is taken he could note that in his conclusions. this sub did extreamly well and was begging for more power.

and im sure since hes using new subs that are not broken in he could note that also that the sub usually performs better when broken in compaired to a sub that does about the same new as it does broken in.

Obviously there will be variables I can not control but I am trying to make this as even as possible, companies who give me permission will have there subs tested with more power for peak power handling, i have about 20kwmrs on tap for burps. Steve all ready gave me the thumbs up to use it if need be //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Cascade will see a good amount as well

But all initial tests will be done with the same amount of power, so I can keep it as close as possible.
