I read about 5 pages of this, and think a lot of people misunderstand assault rifles. I do not own one, but being prior military and in a LE role now, I have to disagree with Obama on this. ASSAULT RIFLE DOES NOT MEAN FULL AUTO.

An Ar-15 type weapon you buy in the store as a civilian does not shoot full auto/3 round burst like military M-4's. The .223 round used in AR's is a very common round used for varmit hunting, ie the AR you can legally buy is a great varmit gun anywhere in the U.S.

The pre-ban was a joke anyways. All it did was limit how many mods and what size magazine you could have on your AR, meaning you could still own one.

I worry they will start with this and start taking more and more weapons away like they did in the U.K and Australia. I can agree with certain weapons being illegal to buy/own. There is no need for someone to own a Tec-9 or Uzi or similar type handgun that is used in more killings than any AR or "assault" looking weapon.

Why would I want my government to strip me of weapons as a law abiding citizen? Well they won't, they will just strip me of the title "law abiding citizen".

I really do believe that the people should be allowed to own full auto assault weapons, even mp-5 and mp-7 type weapons. After a year or two all of the dumb fawks that brandish their guns in liqueur stores, and the hippies that are too cool to defend themselves will be dead or hiding.

Didn't read all 11 pages. But... One reason to bear arms is for protection. Why shouldn't I be able to have the gun I think will protect me and my family the best?

Why stop at ar's? Why not ban any semi-auto's also even the 10-22 Rugers? You can kill more people with those than single shots. Hell, Why not go back to ball and powder rifles?

i dont know much about guns or the gun ban or politics for that matter but i do know that this ban is only gonna effect people who purchase their shit legally, the people who arent using them to commit crimes. Granted some people who decide to do criminal acts do buy theirs legally, but if they are considering doing a crime I'm sure they have no problem purchasing them illegally

Do any of you guys who are saying that you agree with Obama know what an Assault Rifle is!? Assault rifle by definition is a weapon that can shot full auto. I have a AR-15 and AK-47 and hunt with both. Why am I going to all of a sudden be stripped from that.

And whoever the idiot was at the beginning of this thread said that, Who gave us the right to bear arms is an idiot. The Constitution does. And so you know people brought that up to the Supreme court saying it doesn't say it but the Supreme court found that indeed the Constitution does give us the right to bear arms only 30 years ago, so no it's not an OUTDATED PRACTICE. Learn your Constitution and everything thats been attached to it.

A Little Gun History

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

* Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent

* Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent

* Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind him of this history lesson.
