Testing "SA-12" Prototype

what are the specs on the box it did a 45 in? and thats off like 1800 watts right?
About 2.5 cubes tuned in the mid 40s with way too much port for a 12" woofer *laughs*

96 in^2 of port area -- this box is made for a 15" driver... a 15" Nightshade is 4 dB louder than a 12" Nightshade in this box on the same power.

Depends on how you are on the volume. That is, what, 1500 watts at 2 ohms ?
It seems very capable of taking that amount of power on music -- on sine waves it still seems to be okay as long as you are within mechanical limits. I wouldn't try to play a 1500-watt sine wave for an hour or anything, though.

I say this because "music power" is far less than actual RMS power... I'll clamp mine on music to see exactly how much power I was seeing when driving home yesterday, it was more than fine during that time. The music I used yesterday for clamping was Bass Mekanik so WAS pretty much constant power.

We are also extending x-mech in the motor to equal basket limitations - so it should be ever more resilient to short term bursts of musical dynamics!

rumblebee2,

We may do a pre-order once we get a good, solid ETA.

kmanian,

Me too! I have a few vehicles I'd love to put these in for friends and family //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Would also be a good candidate for a huge 4th order wall setup.
I'm thinking 2 15's on 2300Wrms 1150W a sub 6.cu.ft @37HZ in a CRX for street beat try to get a ~148/150

I found the only way to kill this sub within reason - bottoming it out. So, we are going to re-prototype with a few changes to make this a near impossibility (and a few other minor things):

1) Adding 10mm to magnet stack

2) Moving vent holes closer to the pole by 5mm

3) Making the coil 5mm taller and increasing pole extension as well

4) Creating a plastic spacer ring under the basket

This makes total x-mech 33.75mm vs 26.25mm now.

Keep in mind I had 1800 watts on tap too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif So it was already difficult to bottom out.

Nice looking sub, goodness what a buncha xmax that is! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

Are you going to dress up the magnet a bit before production or leave it raw as is? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Lol. They're only 600watt subs. Everyone is already wanting to shove double rms power down their throats. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Raw most likely - I suppose I could make a magnet boot but 99% of people will never see the back of the woofer again after installed.

X-Mech is what I am talking about - the point at which the woofer can't physically move farther. The first prototype I've been testing has 16mm of linear x-max but was able to physically move 26.25mm and bottom out. I am making some changes for 18mm of linear x-max but 33.75mm before the coil can bottom out.

Xmech is what I meant. I need more caffine. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

16mm is about all you would need for 600 watts... a larger coil will just increase peak numbers...result is lower musical output raise dampning and be peakier unless you give it more power or plan to tune its really really low...none the less your a smart man and i sure anything you build will exceed expectations...

i like the woofer you got there.. simple nothing fancy... good parts good design nothing cheezy or flashy.... it is nice to have a sweet looking DC though. what you plan to change on this woofer?
Just these things:

1) Adding 10mm to magnet stack (for more x-mech primarily, FEA shows very slight increase in motor strength)

2) Moving vent holes closer to the pole by 5mm (if the magnets are slightly off by even 1-2mm at current spacing they can block air flow, accounting for production tolerance)

3) Making the coil 5mm taller and increasing pole extension as well (since I have so much rearward x-mech I want to make it harder to jump the coil forward too)

4) Creating a plastic spacer ring under the basket (the pole was getting too close to the dust cap, it could potentially smack the cap with increased x-mech) - this is also why I used a bubble cap in the first place.

Thanks for the comments //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I am pretty excited about it - the cap will be exactly the same except with "Sundown Audio" on it.

I'd buy 2 of them for $350 shipped when it comes out
um, i dont think you understand sonething, lol

usually when a product comes new from the factory, its usually a "no haggle" type deal

im pretty sure that he said 200 ea? so 400+ shipping will do it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif
