Testing a Head unit out of CAR

Is there a specific protocol to testing a H/U out of the car.

I just want to make sure it's not DOA!

I have heard stories about Amps and stuff going bad if you try to give them juice when not fully connected to the system. Just want to know if you guys have any tricks to test H/U's???

well get a 12 volt power supply a battery charger will work if you do not have one, on my bench I have a 13.8 volt power supply and two old 6x9s in boxes all the wires have alligator clips on it, so its usually a matter of stripping the wires back and within 2 minutes I will know if there is something wrong with the deck

Battery chargers are a little to flaky for my likings, find a 12V power supply (battery for instance).

in a pinch yes, but yes it is way better to use a regulated power supply
