NASHVILLE, Tenn]

Metro schools will start using a new spray to test students for drug possession, a method designed to keep illegal narcotics off campuses.

For years, Metro schools have relied on a dog to sniff out drugs at schools. However, assistant superintendent Ralph Thompson said with a high number of students being busted with pot and cocaine, they are adding a new search method.

Metro will be the first school district in Tennessee to use D4D drug detection spray. The test is said to be 90 percent accurate and can detect more than 10 different drugs based on a color chart.

School leaders said they will use the test on students' desks, cars, book bags and pockets.

Thompson said the new test will be effective in cutting down on drugs at school. Even if school officials don't find the actual drugs on a student, a positive test will give them reason to continue searching and notify parents.

"(Parents can be contacted, and we can) say, 'Hey, you know what? We didn't find 'X' on your child today, but this is what we did find. You might want to have your child tested. You might want to counsel your child,'" said Thompson.

Thompson said a positive reading does not always mean a particular student is using drugs, but they might be in close contact with someone who is. He said the district will always run several tests to find the source of the problem.

"We're going to continue to search and search and search until we can't find anything else," said Thompson.

Thompson said the equipment for the test will be free through a partnership with the National Institute of Justice. Metro schools will begin using the spray-test next week.

wow! thats gotta ****, I mean I was never a pothead or anything but I had many friends who smoked out before school. Id of been so in trouble many times for just hanging out with them!

That HAS to open them up to some litigation at some point.

I mean think of it, some kid gets sprayed with the shit and shows that he's been smoking pot - when in reality someone who was selln on campus brushed up against them and transfered the material. Now the school administration chastises the student for something he/she didnt even do. I see a lawsuit in the making on that one.

I wonder if they are going to spray the wallet's of the police and principals. I get $100 someone will get a false positive due to being drug residue on money.

I can see it now...

"Teen with tainted money expelled from school"

Joe Blow neither possessed nor tested positive for drugs, but because he had residue on his hands from handling money at McDonald's after school, we are going to have to expell him.

Yes, this is what I was going to mention. So your pothead friend smacks you on the back and then the school tells your parents you are a druggie. Sounds like a great plan //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

too bad you said after school

but, it must be nice to buy mcdonalds at school. Tn schools must be nice.

Won't they need parental permission to spray this shit? I personally would not want my kid getting sprayed by some new shit on the market to test for drugs on my kid when we really don't know if it has any side effects yet.

Another issue is I think this is more automatically assuming kids are doing drugs all the time, I personally think it should be the parents job and if I suspect anything I can always run to the drug store and get one of those at home tests. I don't need the school system parenting my kids for me.
