Talk me into or out of going sealed

My box that is in my car right now is basically a ground pounder setup, and while I liked it at first, I realize that I don't listen to low bass notes all the time, and the fact is that it really doesn't slam hard, it just hits unbelievably low. This setup is an MTX 9521-44 powered by a JBL BP1200.1 in a 4 cubic ft. box ported to 35hz.

I'm picking up a couple sheets of MDF tomorrow to start on my new box and amp racks, but I'm still undecided about whether to build a smaller ported box or going sealed this time.

I listen to a big mixture of music, from rap, heavy metal, classic rock, 80's rock, etc. etc.

Should I build a 2.5 cubic ft box ported to 32hz, or go ahead and build a sealed box?

Funny, my XXX is in a ported box and I am the one of the farthest things from a basshead. The SQ is excellent. It is all going to depend on the sub.

if you really want a musical box tune it to 28hz

sealed if you want your sub to blend in with your front stage completely.

ported if you want your bass to bump over your front stage.

I prefer sealed.

juss tune it low, is that a 12 in 4cu? try for a smaller box also, maybe around 2.5-3cu

I agree 100% with those guys. Sealed is for those who love listening to music and ported is for those that like the bump.

I'm sure its possible to get a good spl/sq ported setup but I've never heard one.

Good point - many HT's are ported, and the highest-end stuff is usually a horn, I've noticed.

I like a richer, less surgical sound.

I had an RL-p sealed, and the resolution was incredible, but it lacked the richness I found in an RE SE 15, ported @ 30ish.
