T3 Audio "The Machine"

dont believe it you see it in a shop or in ur hands. there has been alot of products that have been protyped or talked about that nobody ever saw. the ONLY good sub for T3 has been the tsns aka ss xxx...

this....ive seen 382938 prototypes from demuth but they never make it to the stores.

 
that's smart get a nice strong motor a coil that can handle alot of power and then stifffen the suspenion so much the motor force doesn't even lead to effeciency and you need the coil to be that big because the power handling is barely adequate lol. Alot of SPL guys are clueless and that's why. The product has to be bulletproof and that's the cost of it. They only way they can figure out how to get loud is just to take total shots in the dark run it full bore (or attempt to go beyond as they don't understand where the limitiations lie). This leads to product failure if the driver isn't built to the point you have to try very hard to both break it and push it as hard as you can safely. Ideally, you want something that isn't hard to max out mechanically to save on power. ultimately SPL is about displacing as much air as possible, if you can get there with less power compression and you learn the limits and know how to get yourself tuned somewhat properly without a bunch of trial and error softer spiders can be good.

There's yet another factor that increases the complexity of this issue: enclosure tuning. A true SPL sub is designed to burp at or very near enclosure tuning. The importance of cone excursion decreases, while the importance of thermal power limits increases (as compared to subs designed to play music). Normally this would be a simple factor, but very few companies build a sub truly designed ONLY for SPL. Why? Because so many teenagers, like the ones who frequent this site, think they need the "biggest baddest loudest sub in the world" and obviously if sub X is winning comps, that must be it. Manufacturers have every intention of driving sales based on their SPL-lane fame, so they build subs that will do both play burps in a high tuned fart box, and still be somewhat musical and have the ability to absorb/dissipate heat over a longer period of time.

For example, the mass on the coil of the speaker this thread is about would/will likely be so heavy as to have some severe detrimental affects on its ability to play transient material. But that wont stop people from buying it for their daily system, and running to the internet to tell everyone it still "sounds good".

But over all I agree, the wattage race many manufacturers are in these days is directly related to the common misconception that watts = deebeez.

 
the whole point of a alum coil is light weight less mass so its louder and more effecient. yes you loose bl going to alum over copper but alum is normally louder depending on the gap. copper takes daily beating normally a lil better though...

 
Simply more thermal handling -- the 5" coil is going to have a huge amount of surface area.

A coil of that magnitude is going to handle alot of power thermally - especially when placed in a well cooled motor. Alot of people want a sub that will absorb a ton of wattage and T3 is trying to give it to them.

Larger dia. coils have clear advantages.. but if you are going to the trouble of making a sub like this I don't see why an inferior conductor would be used.. a two layer wind or smaller gauge using copper along with a tighter gap would be better IMO, especially since they seem to be going 'all out'...

Then again, it's just a prototype...

That's because a lot of people simply think lots of watts means lots of deebeez. Just like the xmax race of a few years ago between manufacturers, this fad too will subside, and the pendulum of technology/techniques used will swing back to a more realistic ideology. There are downsides to massive amounts of excursion like the 06 XXX offers, just like there are downsides to building a huge massive gigantic motor just so it can absorb/dissipate tons of power. Consumer education always lags behind the fad trends by several years. Im still waiting for the non-round cone fad to die.
