system in my boat

Somebody Please Help. I Just Hooked Up A Stereo System In My Boat And When I Turn My Head Unit Up Loud The Power To The Head Unit Turns Off. When I Lower The Unit It Turns Back On Again. What Do I Need To Do?? I Went With A Thicker Guaged Wire And Its Doing The Same Thing. And Heres The Kicker It Even Cuts Out When The Boat Is Running. I Dont Get It

although i assume the boat would be made of flotation material like fiberglass with plastic/foam type matieral inside soooo... i dont know?

i have the power hookud up directly to the battery.

hmmm is right lol my battery has a great charge. i dont get it. as soon as i turn up my stereo to a loud position it turns off. i know there is nothing wrong with the stereo because i just took it out of my car. and its only pushing two polk 6.5's to the front and two polk 6x9's to the rear. they sound great i just cant turn it up too loud. and for this to happen when the engine is running just really stumps me

are you trying to turn the volume higher now then you ever did in the car? Are the speakers the same as were in the car?

It obviously takes much more power to get as loud on a boat as it would in a car.

What could be happening is that the head unit has some sort of protection feature. When you turn it up to the point that the internal amplifier in the HU is sending the speakers a clipped signal, it automatically shuts off. This would make a lot of sense. To get your speakers really going on a boat and to send them a clean signal,,, you really need an external amplifier.

when i had the stereo in my car i would listen to it at 28 i wouldnt go any higher than that because of distortion. now that i have it in the boat it cuts off when i go past 23

unhook your speakers, one set at a time and see if the problem still happens. also try it with nothing hooked up at all. also try turning off all eq and see if that changes anything.

If the problem persists, something is of course wrong with your head unit. Because you have your speakers in different enclosures on your boat,, the volume that it clips or distorts at will be different.

btw thanks for the help. but heres another one. when i first started hooking up the system in the boat i had initially hooked up a different hu, it started cutting out on me so i thought is was bad. so thats when i took the hu out of my car and put it into the boat and the same thing. so something wierd is going on. do you think a bad ground would do this??

are you running an amp?

Some boat alt's are really small ~50A. Could you just be over-taxing the alt and getting the voltage below the HU's acceptable range?

no amp just head unit

yes yes yes... a bad ground would totally do this.. This is most likely the problem as you said it has happened with 2 head units. Make sure you have a super solid ground at the battery.
