SX not loud enough..

I recently picked up a 12" RE SX D1 (reconed by Nick at Fi) in a 2.7ft^3 @ 32hz enclosure powered by an Infinity 1211A @ 2ohm (about 1,200w). The problem I'm havng is that it's just not loud enough for me. I believe it has the potential but every time I turn up my gain just a tiny bit, the sub begins making a popping/clicking type sound. I've had this problem in the past with other subs and they all ended up blowing up soon after. Is the Infinity amp just too much for the SX? Should I consider switching to a new sub? Would a different enclosure (larger, smaller, different tuning) help? Any suggestions as to what I should possibly be looking into upgrading to? Whatever I get would go in another vented enclosure, I like the idea of 1 12" but I'm thinking I'm going to have to go with 2 12"s to get the sound I'm looking for. i would think that your amp isn't pushing rated power... did you get it from varsitybumper? if so, that's my old sub. and i was running 1500 watts to it no problem. it sounded good and loud. and in my experience, infinity car amps ****.

Yeah, I picked it up from VB. I've got a Planet Audio amp sitting at home and I'm going to try switching it out and seeing how it sounds. The SX just seems like it should be impressing me a lot more then it is right now.

Single SX 12 was obnoxiously loud in my car. With 1800 watts from the Incriminator.

I had to back off it sometimes tho.

yeah, when i was running 1500 watts in a 2.0 cube box at 32 hz it got pretty loud. i actually sold it because it was too loud for me

A popping or clicking noise would indicate mechanical limits of the sub are being reached. This could happen by running the system too far below tuning, or by pushing too much power thru it.

By the way you describe adjusting your gain, I suspect you are clipping your amp and outputting more power than you think.

Another possibility is you are simply getting some tinsel slap. When I ran one of my xxx's sealed I would get it from time to time, on 500 watts.

Stick a dmm on the amp and see if you are even in the ballpark as far as your gain setting. Then go from there. You cant fix the problem until you are sure what it is. Just replacing components (subs, amps, etc) until you are happy could turn into an inefficiently expensive method.

I can't believe I'm reaching the mechanical limits of the sub. If so, there are a lot of people on REs nuts for nothing then. I don't think the amp is clipping or giving too much power (I've heard the Infinities are a little underrated).

I believe I've narrowed it down the tinsel slap. I came home, pulled the sub out of the box and started playing with it. I put some power to it and I can hear/see the tinsels making contact. I don't want to let this continue because I can see the spider beginning to wear a little. if my re se can take 1500 i know ur se can handle the same or alittle more. try 2cubes with 2 4inch aeroports tuned to 33hz sub up port back r if u have a trunk sub and port facig back. and slap around 1500-1800watts and u will be shocked

Yes, build a better box that controls the subs excrusion throughout the frequency range. More sound less slap.

Yea but when the cones travels downward, then the tinsel gets stuck in between the felt pad and the spider.

with the RE SX 12" you should be running 2.0cf3 tunned at

about 33hz...

with 2.7cf3 you risk over exerting and bottoming the sub

out under high power (the weird noises you are hearing)

Your box is too big and its tuned too high.
