Switching Enclosures (Going FROM Ported to Sealed)

Now I may be the only goofy bastard that wants to do this, but I want to move my two 12" subs from a ported box to a sealed box.

I did a Google search, but all the results as about going the opposite direction of that which I am wanting to go (results are all sealed to ported)

My question is, what do I need to know when choosing a sealed box? I know the box can be smaller, which is one of the reasons I am going this route and also I want cleaner instead of louder bass.

A good ported box will sound better than a sealed box (just my opinion) because it will play the lower notes with more authority instead of wimping out. What subs and box are you currently using?

Everyone here hates sealed boxes however, in my experiences a sealed box DOES yield better sound quality and can most certainly be smaller. If you go from ported to sealed you will most likely lose output and some low end. Although a few of the sealed boxes I have built seemed to have no effect on how deep the sub gets. When I built a sealed box for my hcca to Orion specs I literally couldn't tell a difference In output or low end, but that sub is designed for a sealed box

I am not going to even say the model/brand because I will get flammed. I do have a question though. I looked up the Woofer specs and it states in the manual/fact sheet recommended enclosure: Sealed . However, I bought these pre-assembled by the same manufacture and they put it in a ported box.

What is your guys recommendation despite that fact that you guys here like ported better (from what one member said)?

You're best bet is to grab WinISD and map the subs, or tell us the subs and I'll do the same thing and tell you how much smaller of a sealed box you can use.

Just tell us what the subs are, or at least list the T/S parameters. There is no way to even try to help you if you can't do that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

I agree with this and will add that my sealed box with the 15's I built for it probably plays lower then 95% of the ported boxes people on these forums use... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I know you are probably going to mock these... But... I will be honest they sound pretty **** good, my friend who has JLs was even surprised (he gives no bullshit opinions). They do not sound nearly as good as JLs of course but sound good nevertheless.

I have two of these PDF Spec Sheet (How I bought it Model XS-L120B5D )

BTW: The pdf does have on page 2 the spec requirements for each type of box

Right but after tuning they fall flat on their face....plus sealed doesnt need a ssf.
Why is needing a subsonic filter a negative? It's not like it costs anything to get one, it's a standard feature of pretty much every subwoofer amplifier. The dip in the response curve after the peak is one of the drawbacks of the ported enclosure but the better lowend and increased overall output makes up for it.
