Subwoofer Suggestion

I have been out of the game for about 10 years. I have been driving a company car for the past couple of years, and I’m finally about to get a personal car again. Doing research again, and boy has things changed since my last system! Lots of new brands I don’t recognize , and a lot of brands I knew are now gone or no longer the same apparently.

Trying to find a 12” sub that’ll work in a small ported enclosure, and that sounds great sounds great. I don’t need anything too loud. I will probably be feeding it about 500 watts RMS. For reference my favorite subwoofer I have ever owned was an Image Dynamics IDQv2 12” and I had that in a ported 1.3ft big tuned to 28hz. I appreciate all of your help!

  1. Not right now
This 12" is very efficient, sounds absolutely outstanding and can be tuned to 24 (recommend 29hz) in a 1.5 cu ft (net) box. There isn't a better sub out there for the money. Feed it about 1.1.5k watts (not a lot of difference in pricing from a 500 watt mono to a 1500 watt mono amp these days.

1.2k $179 while they last

Another great option in drivers.

$159.99 in a 1.25-1.5 box

With this 500 watt on sale amp at $99

Another really great option.

$189.00

With this amp, killer combo!

1250 watts @ 1 ohm $125

-OR-

1500 watts $169 (less 10% off first time or email setup)

+1 on the Stereo Integrity. Mf got loud on little power. Works well in small boxes. I. Currently running their $200 18 inch sub on about 700 watts Ina sealed box and sounds great. Also had the NVX VCW as well. Great sub. Had some issues bottoming out under heavy transients but I also had it on 2x rated power so

As for amps, check out the JP line of amps on Down4Sound. Specifically the JP3CFT. Rated at 555 1-4 ohms but dynos around 900 at 2 ohm and 1100 at 1 ohm. I've had their JP84 4 channel, and I currently am using their JP8 in my girls truck and I have the JP13 in my Jeep on the 18 inch I mentioned earlier. The bass knob comes with a voltage and temperature meter as well as a clip light to make sure you aren't damaging the amp. Also the bass knob is shaped like mini version of the amp itself. Also every amp series they make comes in your choice of polished white, black, green, purple, blue, and grey

Get yourself a an 8 in subwoofer, I have two B2 Audio Rage 8 V2 DVC 4 ohm subs in a 40 Hz tuned box 1.4 cu ft of air space. 500 RMS each but run them at 650 watts total and at 4 ohms, still hit hard. I run stock head unit and alternator, amp with 200% damper is a plus too. 4 ohm easier on electrical and better sound quality.

Not to mention as size increases sensitivity and the ability to play lower typically increase...lots of reasons to as big as possible 😂

I’ve read plenty of great things in the SQL sub. It’s becoming more and more tempting to go that route. Would 500 watts be enough for the sub? I was thinking of running the JL Audio RD900/5. Or would paying more for the Sony XM-5WS be worth it?

The sale must be over, they're $350 now. Crazy specs on that sub. Both the 10 & 12 can be crammed into incredibly small sealed enclosures and have 28mm of xmax. Very impressive indeed.

They are quite amazing subs. SI is a bit of a niche group for sure. One of the few companies left where the focus is on how can I make this driver work optimally in a car, and not completely break the bank - exceptionally good and purpose designed/built subs. I love pretty much all the stuff they make. Their low profile units are also outstanding. They really like around 1500 watts but all the same, still outstanding at 500 watts too.

For front staging, I only use Si amps, nothing else. Absolutely amazing A/B amps that have very clean straight signal to amplifier section paths. I've done side by sides with some very good class "D" and while the Helix, Focal, Mosconi, Brax and some others rank nearly as high, the Si product just has a little more sparkle and smoothness, more life. Add custom feet and they don;t look to bad either!

the NVX has similar specs to the timpano t2500 at the similar price point
would it be a decent alternative if loaded enclosure was a must?
23 xmax, box @ 30hz with 2.1 cu ft

The sql's are kinda crazy. They maintain low end and output in boxes that would choke out the bottom on most other subs 😂. Honestly you're getting a ton of value even at SI's full price imo.

500w will get it moving in a ported box (although they really come alive around 1k) They really need closer to 1k sealed to get moving

Depends on how loud you are going for. 500 watts will sound great will a decent kick to it and will blend in well with the speakers. Throw it in a 1 cubic foot net sealed box and you'll be golden.

Realistically you can easily throw 2-3 rated power that those subwoofers and be golden. I had mine on my JP13 at 1 ohm. Stock alt tho so I def was seeing the full 1800-2k that amp is capable but Ive seen and heard many people abusing the hell out of em. But that only if you want to. Those subs are super super efficient so 500 watts will be more than enough
