subwoofer direction

Ive seen a few builds on here that has the cone of the subwoofer facing into the box, which really got me wondering why you would do this. Are there any benefits to this or is it just the cosmetics the builder chose? Other than with a bandpass, ive always had my speakers facing outward. does this work in a sealed application or only vented?

Well, part of it might be cosmetic, but mounting the subs inverted will also help save on displacement, in a multiple sub setup this might help you achieve a smaller box. Mounting it standard with the motor in the box causes a bit of displacement, on some SPL motors it is around .2 cubic feet of displacement, so you can see how with multiple subs the little .2's can add up. I'm sure there are a few other reasons too, but thats the main one i've considered.
