the flat-coned ppi subs
You realize those subs are almost 15 years old now, right?
But then again, I dont really follow the logic of this entire thread. Speakers are form of technology that, at least of as now, is continually changing and improving. IMO the only way a sub would never lose their popularity here was if we, as a collective whole, stopped following or caring about new innovations in the industry.

Well honestly, almost every sub that was popular (or now is popular) has very little innovation to it, and the reason the popular subs change has more to do with dollars and audio politics than it does technology. Technology is expensive and usually focused on improving sound quality; unfortunately many of the members here are cheap and uninterested in good sound.

Especially in car audio, there is suprisingly little complex engineering done, and even less R&D.

I'm glad the Type ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR hype is gone.

I haven't been on ca.com in a while, and I don't really see much of a forum boner... at least not as erect as when the type-r craze or the RE SX/XXX boners were around.

I understand where you are coming from, but if we are looking at this in terms of many years, as lot of the drivers being mentioned here implies, I have to disagree. Car audio subwoofers, for one example, have come a long way since the days when I first got into it. A PPI Pro is a good example, in its day it was fairly technologically advanced. Ferrofluid cooling, flat carbon fiber/nomex cone, proprietary basket... the things that made it unique and stand out. But by today's standards, for the average guy's sq sub the ppi pro is pretty lacking in comparison to current bl optimized, long excursion and small enclosure intended subs. Has anyone reinvented the wheel? No. But enough changes over time that the enthusiast will want to 'upgrade', and generlly for good reason.
I own a pair of ppi pro's. Bought them back when they were top of the line. Love them. Probably wont ever sell them because they just... have that coolness factor I guess. But I certainly dont use them anymore. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

All this coming from guy who currently owns no sub newer than an '05... and that seems pretty new to me still.
