subs that have really fallen off the scene

hmmm....the oldest stuff i currently own is a pair of Kenwood 1021's (top of the line in their day) circa 89 i believe. I also have a pair of 12" Savard Rap series subs and a pair of 15" RFL's
Oh shit I forgot about Savard. And I still totally remember wanting a pair of M&M Godfather subs back then but I was a broke *** kid back then //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I found this beauty on a google search.... yum yum!

Speaking of old technology, here is really my only antique I have left. An example of a manufacturer made bandpass isobaric enclosure! Circa 1989 by Polk

You bought tht from crutchfield didnt you? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
I actually heard those were pretty good performers, but I never heard one personally. They were pretty pricey too iirc.

No, I first saw one at a demo booth at a local audio shop back in 89. I remember the price distinctly at $500 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

I still use it as my computer's subwoofer. Works great //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Avalon, Calcell, Urban Audioworks, not sure about HiFonics subs, but amps yes, Marathon, Badmofo subs back then, Nexus, Audiomobile, internet based company only, remember Mohawk??!! And Stillwaters' own push-pull isobarick config design back in the 90's I think....akk I can think of right now

I so remember that box from Polk, but it def was not 89 for me, was not even really into car audio at that point. Saw that enclosure a few years later, and still light up when I see it again. Really bring back some memories.....

And yes, that was quite pricey, like most of Polks stuff was back in the day.

I guess they could be added to this thread as well, because comparing there early 2000 on subs to the DB and EX series of the mid to late 90s is like night and day in my opinion, the older Polk stuff was much better.

no you can't //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif.... I ran around trying to find recones forever. I talked to Orion techs directly and they said they don't sell recones. Even Scott at Fi said he couldn't do it.
Also, as far as I know Orion never reconed them either. When you'd send one in for warranty you'd just get a new one.

Car audio subwoofers, for one example, have come a long way since the days when I first got into it. A PPI Pro is a good example, in its day it was fairly technologically advanced. Ferrofluid cooling, flat carbon fiber/nomex cone, proprietary basket... the things that made it unique and stand out. But by today's standards, for the average guy's sq sub the ppi pro is pretty lacking in comparison to current bl optimized, long excursion and small enclosure intended subs.

One could say we've moved forward in technology, but also taken a step back. Subs now are not as efficient as they used to be. I remember when the though of 1,000 watts in a car was absurd.

Also, anyone remember Audiomobile? I don't think I've heard them mentioned in years.

probably because alot of the high power subs back in the day were nothing more than a pro audio sub with a 4 ohm coil haha. Remember the 1000w JBL subs? Around early 90s that had like the ribbed sorround? Tell me they didnt just stick a 4ohm coil in it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif Alot of the high power subs were built by EV or Eminence with their dustcap on it, or taken from their proaudio division, think CV, JBL, MTX, etc
