Subs smell

Ok so I have had these subs hooked up for a very long time with no clipping or problems at all then the other day my battery was dead so I had to jump my truck and since then they have not hit as hard and smell like burnt coil if I turn them up.

They don't sound bad and I can't feel or hear coil rub but they are not as loud and smell like bad coil.

I have never heard of jumping your car messing up subs but it's really the only thing that has changed/happened. They are old subs but I don't really ever beat them hard and if I do it's not for long.

I am thinking that at least on of them is on it's way out but just wanted to see if people that know more then me had any input.

I had a similar problem. Came to find out that my battery had a bad charging cell so my charging voltage was only about 13.8-14V, thus causing minor clipping and not allowing the amp to put out its full power. I would recommend getting that checked. The smell could be the result of clipping due to this, thus causing the amp to send the subs a dirty signal.

Right on! I know for a fact my bat is about shot and I was hoping there was a chance it could be something to do with that because I would hate to see these old school little beast burn out for seemingly no reason.

As far as batteries go would it be worth it to go with a lower rated higher price/quality XS or just pick up something like this locally. NAPA AUTO PARTS

I don't have crazy money to spend and the starter bat will be the only one I have in my car.

That is another possibility, however most HU that I've encountered auto sets a LPF as long as it is in Sub Out mode or in the Sub Out RCAs.

I would also recommend looking into Kintetik batteries. Usually a fair bit cheaper and just as good.

By the way just to put it out there here is my setup.

Stock Mercury premier "sound system" with the little sub/amp

Crappy stock Ford 6 disc

PAC LC-1

Klarity RCA cables

Karma SS speaker wire

Kolossus 4 gauge power and ground

3 of the old (11 years) aluminum cone Vortex competition series Planet Audio 12's wired down to 1.3 ohm

In a custom sealed box

Powered by an old school Planet TT1250D (= 1250 watt class-D mono block amp) from when Planet was still making decent stuff.

I have been told that the amp was slightly under rated.

All stock electrical with 130 amp alt.

The bat I had is this one http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_battery-group-size-65-850-cca-autocraft-gold_2040468-p?searchTerm=battery#fragment-1 it's from 09 and is now pretty much shot.

No big 3. I have some really old Monster 4 gauge I was going to do it with but never got around to it.

It's not bad for what it is. It's louder then you would probably think and still louder then most people in my area even though it's an old setup.

Well I have not been using my subs but today when messing with my radio I think I found out what messed them up. Some how during my car dying and being reset the compress feature on my HU got turned on, if you don't already know that is very bad for speakers/subs when playing loud music and can cause clipping/distortion.

I mean I don't know for sure but I think the old beast is A-OK. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

Oh that old girl was toasty.

I took it apart gingerly so everything except the second spider is %100 intact and then I unwound the coil. I had the crazy idea of just putting it back in and using it like a sub reverb since the other two subs push it like if it was still working. That way it would save me from having to make another box until after the other two blow or I get more expendable income.
