subs getting hot

I have two Rl-p's and i noticed that the metal cone gets hot (guessing from the voice coil)....and today it got too hot to touch and this was after a 10 min ride. (was about a 100 degrees today).

Does this mean i am putting too much power into them causing them to heat up??

at first I was thinking maybe something is wired wrong, but after noticing how hot is was in your area I believe it is just from the weather and the metal cones mixing, think about it, when your car is sitting parked for a few hours in the heat, your dash and steering wheel are hot as hell right, well, same scenario with the subs, I wouldn't worry about it.

NOW if you where in antartica on some ice expedition that for some crazy reason u had to bring ur sub with you and it was to hot to touch, then yeah something would be rong... but that sounds normal

I have the same problem too, I have a 12" L5 with a KX600.1 kicker amp that I just got today I noticed the bass does not sound right the low tones mostly. I have the gain on the amp up half way. after a 25 min. ride home I took out the sub and found it pritty hot it is wired right but I can't figure why it does not sound right it's in a ported box wired at 4 ohms. Can any one help?

wahts the tuning on the box? and wahts the size?. You got ur gains set correctly? Or did you just set it to half and call it a day? O also wahts the temperature around ur area when you think its getting hot? Try playing it at night then see if its hot.

I had the amp up more but it sounds worse I have the x-over down all the way and the bass boast up a quarter of the way. It was about 70 dig F on the way home. also my box your going to laugf but it just the right size for my truck it fits between the front and rear seats in my truck. [/img]

You know most subwoofers are wall under 1% efficient, right ? This means that
Look at how large your amplifier's heatsink is ... Let's say it's 70% efficient and produces 1000 watts; this means the amplifier's heatsink has to dissipate 429 watts. By comparison, your subwoofer being sent 1000 watts must dissipate 990 watts (over double that of the amplifier) ...

Of course the subwoofer is going to get hot ...

wow........AND ON TOP OF THAT i hear the re xxx's are inefficent compared to other subs........ewwww

non the less, i am a die hard XXX fan.....and yes that can be taken as a pun if you'd like.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

at the shop i go to they say that kicker is one of the subs that needs "break- in" or pushing them no more than 75% of their full power... after like a week or less, depends how much u bump them, they will get loose and sound better... try that.

Yah I noticed it sounded better today, I'll keep the gain on my amp half way for a while Also I'm going to build a better box I was thinking of a bigger ported box. Mabey it will play the lower notes better

Two different things. What Jmac is talking about is called "No", and is basically just a measure of the percentage of input power that is converted to actual movement of the sub. What you are reffering to is the "sensitivity" of the sub; db output for a given input level.
