I know this may be a stupid question, but can someone explain to me why having (2) 10's, which is 20" of total cone area (roughly) does not equal (1) 18"? Assuming similar x-max's and total power handling. Or (2) 8's not being equal to (1) 15", etc.

because 2 tens are not 20 inches of area. Pi®^2 gives you the area of a circle.

Because cone displacement is not the only factor when setting SPL world records. The one you're talking about was 1 DD 99Z 18". It's no ordinary sub. It uses a neodymium motor, and it can take an incredible amount of power especially on burps. I believe it was done using a small hatchback covered in concrete so there was very little vibration causing cancellation. The box was designed specifically to peak at the vehicle's resonant frequency as well as keep impedance rise low. A large number of huge amps were put on this single sub. I don't know how you would achieve these same goals with 3 10's. Hell I don't know how this guy did it with 1 18" but rest assured there were MANY more factors at play than simply cone area.

What's more embarrassing is that I've been wondering that stupid shit since they were using "Flashdance" for SPL at "Crank it up" contests and kicker had the world record @ 161 with (12)-18's in an Astrovan.

No you're not. What makes someone an idiot is attacking people when they try to help them. You're FAR from an idiot. Literally nobody here knows how to make any vehicle achieve a spl of 180... nobody.
