Does it really make any difference? I put my sons 13w7 that BARELY fit in a ported box in his cavalier trunk faceing towards the rear. Would it make any difference to turn it around and have it firing towards the rear seat or facing towards the trunk lid? The thing pounds the 99 cavalier like crazy though.

Peace

there wouldnt be any difference. try putting it in a sealed box since u said it barely fits ported, your not moving the air it needs

Man not sure I would want it any louder. The kid will be def LOL... I know when I have it pounding it hurts my eardrums. I can feel my hair moving also... You are right though man there is not much room at all in his trunk with this massive box.

In some cases, if you seal it off and direct fire it into the cabin you will lose a few decibels because you change the transfer function. I know one person who turned his RE SE 15 around in a 1997 Civic to stop the trunk/spoiler from rattling like crazy and he was disappointed when he lost 3 decibels on the Termlab AND his bass wasn't as deep.

ETA: Some reading for you!

I disagree. Rear firing will probably sound louder to the ear and boomier. You may feel like your losing sound by forward. If you do forward firing without sealing the trunk you may be disappointed. Seal it and it will get louder.

This may be true for some trunks but not all. I lose 2 db when I rear fire my subs. Been tested over and over and always the same result. When I forward fired them I lost with the box pushed forward without sealing, and gained alot by being pushed against the trunk lid centered. Just my experience.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

yeah ^^^ they are all right about firing into the trunk. but i guess in some cases, some trunks work worse than others.

i was contemplating on whether to do that also or not. but i did

but my subs in a ported box, i was talkin to a local dealer / friend of mine. he said in order to actually get the full effective of facing the subs into the cabin, is if you actually place the whole front side box completely into the cabin, not any part of it in the trunk, because if its in the back of the trunk, and facing the cabin, you'll have air going into the cabin and air into the trunk and that air into the trunk would be going back into the cabin interfering with other air.

so if you put the the front part into the cabin so you won't be losing all the air, it should be fine. that's what im doing right now.

edit: cause if you notice, when u put ur subs firing into the cabin in the trunk, like really inside the trunk, and u play the music, its loud right? but when you OPEN your trunk, it gets even louder and clearer, that's because theres no air interference in the trunk, its actually going out.

This is the same dilemma that I am facing with my next install in the 1997 Civic. I wanted to direct fire a pair of dd1508s into the cabin with the ports running up through the rear deck. Almost all the DD guys said NOT to do this because the 8s need a surface to load off of:(

I still may do the sealed off, direct fire method with my ports through the rear deck for a pair of 1508s. Just don't expect to hear much from me if it doesn't work:laugh:

Then again, before I do anything, I believe I am going to build a test enclosure for ONE just to play around with the placement.

building a test enclosure is a good idea. With going with dd 8's can you do a slot port instead of firing through the rear deck?

OP where are you located in illinois?
I am about 15 min from Bloomington/Normal. Maybe I will take some pics and show u how crammed the ported box is in the trunk.. I did seal the bottom of the trunk and the deck lid but we have more to do to seal off the trunk better. It does rattle the way it is now but not near as bad as it did before we started to seal it off.

Reading these right now....

best thing to do is try it out.. maybe use a smaller box that is easier to move around just to test with.

me and a buddy just tested a single 12" type R yesterday in a ported box, running off a brutus 1600 @ 2 ohms.. it was loudest firing UP and firing FORWARD. it was still boomy firing towards the rear, but to the ear it was best up and forward. we had it pushed towards the back of the trunk firing forward. i was definitely impressed for just 1 12". he should be getting it on the meter this weekend.. i'd say its around a 139 or so on the TL.
