Sub Crossover point

what do most people here set their low-pass crossover point at on their amp or headunit too??? I played around with my headunit's LP and have had it at 80hz for awhile. Its next jump is to 125hz which I messed with today. On some stuff it really sounds good and brings in that mid bass sound, but some songs not so good. Is this high of a cutoff OK???

Probably will want it to be 80Hz or lower. Anywhere above that and your sub is gonna start sounding muddy. I have mine at 70Hz

80 is the standard, it's best to keep it their and just turn your lows down abit on the head unit.

80hz/12db is pretty standard. that leaves it playing 2 octaves.

you can also try leaving an under lap between you sub(s) and mids as well.

like having a gap. i have my sub crossed at 63hz/24db and my mids at 80hz/12db. thats where it sounds best and also looks best on an RTA.

thats what I thought you meant but why wouldn't you want to "overlap"?? aren't you missing some of those frequencies??

cause u don't need an overlap. the sub will still play above 63Hz just really soft, same with the mids playing below 80Hz

nope. you can use crossover points sort of like a free EQ band.

if you cross the sub at 40hz/12db it's 12db quieter at 80hz. if you cross the mids at 80hz/12db they are 12db quieter at 40hz. thats how a crossover works. so right in the middle at 60hz both are 6db quieter. remember this is how they are crossed electrically, not acoustically. so it isn't a brick wall, it's a gradual slope.

in my install, if i cross both at 80hz then that area sounds to strong. so i created a slight half gap. all depends on the install and your preference.

He is right, I assume you have a Pioneer HU (seeing 80/125hz xover).

I run my subs at 80 and my hpf at 125 for the best sound in my car. The area between 80 and 125 is still a little strong, but not awful.

A lot of cars have a resonant peak in the area between 80-150ish Hz. Underlapping can help tame that resonance.

I know of people crossing very low, like at 50-55 Hz. I guess it depends on your philosophy and the front system what your preferences are. I will try both low and around 80 when the times come.

I like mine at 50hz w/ a -24dB/oct slope.
