hi i was just wondering how you can tell a sub is blown , and what happens to the sub, i bought a used jl 12" w6 and when i installed it it just pops and rattles alitle bit. i assume it is blown.i am powering it with a jl 500/1 but i was just wondering exactly what happens to the sub to make it blown , what part of the sub is messed up ? is their any way to repair a jl w6? thanks for the help

You can repair any woofer it just depends on the cost effectiveness of doing so.

Pops and rattles sounds like the coil has seperated from the spider.

Check the sub by looking at it from the side, use your hands to push the cone out, see if there is movement between where the coil/cone connects to the spider, it should all move as one, if the coil/cone moves but the spider slides around even a tiny bit at its connection point, it's done.

thanks for all the help after looking at the sub the yellow material has seperated from the metal part . is that what is needed reconeing ? anyone have and idea how much jl would charge ? thanks

you talking about the spider? if yes then glue it back yourself

thanks i am up toward delaware area rising sun . i do have CA glue but i was wondering if i need the rubberized black CA glue ? I have also seen people recommend a 5-min epoxy which you can find anywhere. any advice would be great thanks.

me and my boss man used some clear shit like caulk but its called crafts adhesive..this dries real hard..on his MT...seams to be doing fine... or send that one to me and use that Kicker on the floor

You need a glue/epoxy that will not react with the materials to be glued/epoxied.

Call JL and if they are any kind of consumer friendly company they should tell you what you could use.

Not sure about "crafts adhesive" that area gets hot and there is alot of stress on it.

hi thanks for all the help. well i got the correct glue and glued the spider back in place , but still dosent work just kinda rattles and pops . i guess its more serious problems ? any ideas voice coil ?

I bet when the spider gave your subs cocked sideways and scraped that coil right off the former

Ifso, you're probably screwed....

I'm not sure how reasonable JL's recones are, but you could have FI or another company recone it for you...

look at spending at least 100 bucks on that though...

Good Luck

You could try having FI re-cone your driver, but with an odd VC size (2.75") it might be a little tough to track down a former like that. Also, FI usually doesn't stock the soft parts to make your W6 just like a W6 again. I believe JL protects their moving assembly parts fairly well, which means getting a hold of some could prove difficult.

Contact JL and send the driver back to them if you want your W6 to be like new when you get it back.
