A friend asked me to help hook up his system today. I noticed he had 1 d2 and 1 d4 type r. I told him it wont work and it will blow subs/amp. Regardless I ended up hooking it up for him and it seems to play fine.

Ive always known to not use different ohm subs, but my question is what happends when you do.

He has been playing full tilt all day w/o problems

You can.....but each sub is seeing different power loads. If they are in the same box, this can be a problem. To the amp it makes no difference. A load is a load to the amp.

each speaker is seeing a different amount of power due to one having a higher amount of resistance "ohms", it's not that it destroys things it's just not advised because it's not correct.
