Sub Amp gains

Can I adjust the input sensitivity to the sub amp while the subs are on, playing music. would this damage anything? I would not be turning the sens up, I would only be lowering it.

Also, if my current amp is set well for 2 10" subs and I switch to a single 8" sub (same sub brand and type) do i still need to reset the gains on the sub amp or can I just switch and go?

Is it safe to adjust input sens while sub is on and being used? So i can listen to it while im adjusting to get it to my preferred level?
If the starting point was done with a DMM and/or oscilloscope and you know for sure the amp's not exceeding its max level (clipping), then you can certainly turn it DOWN from there by ear while it's playing music. That's how I do it.
