Sub advice for newb

Trying to deside what to put in my crew f150 2013. Sealed or ported, the problem is I only have about 1-1.2cft to take up with a shallow depth underneith rear seat. Amp will be either JL or alpine 5 channel sub channel has 500w rms. Music I listen to is all over from country, dubstep, rock, while typing this listening to ICP and kottonmouth. I want something that gives good sound quality but when I want to turn the knob and rattle the windows and my stepdaughters teeth I can. Help me understand the difference, I have researched cone area but not sure how it all fits in relation to sound and volume.

2x8" sealed Crossfire

1x13.5 sealed JL shallow

1x8 ported crossfire or sundown

1x10 ported Crossfire or sundown

Just to add the rest of system, front rear crossfire C5652, audiocontrol dq61 processor, amp jl or alpine 5ch then the sub above, hushmatt all doros, floor and back panel. I think it will be simple and clean and sound good.

Thanks

Rob

Some shallow mount subs aren't going to "rattle the windows". They are more for the audible bass, than low frequencies that shake stuff.

That being said, I would recomend you get a few Sundown SA 8 V2's or SD 10's.

Air displacement relates more closely to sound and volume. The more air a subwoofer can move, the louder it will be. All things equal, an SA 12 will be louder than an SA 10. The 12 has more usable cone area and both subs have the same excursion. Excursion is the term that describes how far a subwoofer cone moves in and out. Xmax is how far it moves one way, and peak to peak measures the full travel. If two subwoofers have the same cone area, but one has a greater peak to peak travel, the sub that moves more will be louder. Also, Low frequencies are reproduced better by subwoofers with more excursion.

I don't know how much research you've done on sealed vs ported, but your musical tastes will be difficult to cater to. Rock and Country need a sealed box to be punchy and not sound muddy, but dubstep will sound much better in a ported box.

Thank Adulbrich the way you described it makes sense. So based off of what you said the 2xsa8 will have more movement and sound louder then a single sa10, but the 10 will be able to deliver a lower audible sound?

You aren't likely to rattle anyone's teeth with an under seat setup. That said, you can get good bass from those setups but proper air volume for the sub is critical for low end response.

For that truck I would do two good 8" subs in a vented enclosure that's tuned to ~32Hz. Shallow mounts may allow you to stuff more cone area in there but all subs need proper air volumes behind them in order to produce good bass. As was mentioned above, xmax is an important consideration but proper volume is the most important criteria for any good subwoofer system.

It's also important that the box volume and tuning be modeled for the specific sub(s) you're installing, as some subs like more volume than others, even though they may be the same size. As for vented v sealed, that's a no brainer to me. A proper vented enclosure will outperform sealed all day every day on any type of music you listen to... period. Sealed boxes have serious limitations where low end response is concerned and a proper sealed enclosure provides zero acoustical gain at any frequency.

In the end, the myth that sealed boxes are better for sound quality is just that.... a myth. You can check out any of the top SQ vehicles in the world or any of the best sounding home audio, home theater or pro audio subwoofers and they are ALL vented.

The SA 10 does have slightyly more excursion, so it will be able to produce a lower frequency better than the SA 8's.

I think you should go with the 8's though

From what yall are saying I am thinking 2 ported sa8v2 should give me a good amount of quality sound. Looking at the stats for the 8 (0.5-0.75 ft^3 @ 35hz) what differnce in sound quality and volume will the .25 difference make?

It will get a lot lower and take less power to do so in the .75 cube box. The smaller box will be louder around higher frequencies. I'd go with the bigger option if you can

Seperate would be better in case one fails, but common chamber is easier to build. If you're putting the boxes under your seats, I recomend using aeroports. Just use 4" PVC as a port for each box. Its easy to build and tune. You can use elbow joints to turn it and its under your seats, so you'll never see it. That's what I dis with my SA 8 V2, and it was awesome! I had like a 7 foot port, and it got lowwww

thats the thing with these sa8v2's the port is just as big as the box. so are you really saving space?

how much mounting depth do you have the sa8v2 is pretty massive for an 8 best to do some measurements first so you don't end up with a sub you cant use. have you thought about doing a center console enclosure?
