Sticky: GREAT DESIGN for 3 cubes @ 30hz

I just finished building this box for my friend Kyle's Scion Tc tonight,

I used the design that I made shown above, this box fits like a glove perfect for his ride.

We are waiting on the 12" Alpine sub to come in before we cut the hole for the woofer and put the top on.

We used some crazy strong wood glue, 120 nails small and large with the air nail guns and some wood sealent just to make sure there no air leaks. This thing is hella solid...

My buddy Kyle just holding the cuts together making sure everything looks good before we start the project...

Good Idea to paint the inside of the port black before you put it all together...

Husky air nail guns...

Hella tight...

Will look good once it's carpeted black...

The factory cover still works so the system is not visable from outside...

Pic with the top off to expose the tuned port at 30hz...

Another angle with top off, notice the double thick front, no flex allowed...

Can't see it from outside...

What the end result will be like, this guy uses close to the same design...

Box looks good. Does that sub really need 40+ square inches of port?

I built a box today for a SS RL-p15 and it has 36^2 of port. Building the second box tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me what the downside of having too big of a port?
What other woofer would really wang in this box?
none, if it's tuned to 30Hz, that's all that should matter.

bigger port = better = lower port air velocity = no port noise

that box looks great! you're workmanship is awesome. i love using an air powered brad nailer, so much faster than screw!

with alot of power it does. i made a box 2.95 @ 32 with 30 sq inches of port area for a 12'' type R and it had port noise.

i am now using a box with 56 sq inches of port area and its doing just fine.

There is a point of diminishing returns with port area. It usually starts at ~80% of total cone area.
so that's probably about 75in^2 for a 12" sub.

do you mean it's actually worse to have a port larger than that, or that it's just not worth it?

your friend looks EMO. and if this thread did anything, it showed kinda how to mock up and build a nice little enclosure. 3 cubes for a FTW. thats what my BTL is getting.
LOL @ EMO, he actually hates people like that. Most EMO's in scottsdale are fruity, thye talk about stealing there moms hair dye so they can color each others hair - I over heard this gay crap at tacobell once and wanted to beat there *** //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Anyway's the Sub should be here Thursday and I'll make a tight video of the sub in action. It's gonna be much better then other videos that you see because my buddy Kyle the drummer of this band and he has some badass $400 mics that are made to pick up bass from a bass drum. It should come out very well.
