Stereo shops

U tryin to be funny:verymad: No, if I go back to a shop let let them tune, its just different
Because you feel you paid for a service so its better. its juthe placebo effect. they usually do the same thing you do unless theres so spectacular new way. you just need a dmm or an ear for distortion.

its all in the way you eq your stuff. eq, to me is uttermost importance when fine tuning a system. that and of course, hpf/lpf... and adjusting your gains until you hear distortion and backing off. now the freq. response on some amps can be tricky to say at least.

The way I do it I tune the speakers with a DMM, then I tune the subs to match them as best as possible. Unless the customer wants to go for spl, where I do it the other way around (if possible)

Never use Bass boost and always tell them not to f with the settings.

I charge a $25 test-n-tune fee.

-Look over the install for any bad points or mistakes that stand out (grounds, bare wire, poor connections, bad mounts)

-Break out the o-scope and set the gains correctly.

-Set SSF and crossovers.

-Get the owner in the vehicle and set the HU's EQ to their liking.

Another $25 and I break out the TL.

That's the right way //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Ive been to various shops in this area, ranging from Best Buy and circuit city, to what looks like the ghetto hole in the wall that turns out to have a 50 thousand dollar show car full of custom fab work in the garage and brands like Herz, Eclipse, and Focal in the show room. Also been to average mid price shops and to clean, more expensive higher end shops in the nice part of town. Never had issues with the wiring but Ive watched them set my gains every time. Always the same. They turn on my IPOD, use the first song they find, and do it by ear in about 5 minutes. Nobody ever asks me what I listen to normally or what playback device I use most often. Never seen test tones, scopes, or meters invovled. I guess most of them don't bother figuring the average listener won't hear the difference.

Seems like the places that do it high tech text book style are not so common as youd think from reading these boards.
