SS RL-P12: Weird enclosure software results?

Just curious, to those who may know...

When I punch in the T/S param's for the RL-P12 in a sealed enclosure of 1.35 cu. ft. shows a 3db down [f3] of ~97 Hz, which is really high.

Ported 1.3 cu. ft., tuned to ~30Hz looks a LOT better, but still shows a graph being a bit shallow across the spectrum, with a F3 of 34 Hz.

Does that sound right?

Yea the spec's on our woofers don't always model very pretty. Don't know what to tell you other than the T/S parameters are certainly not the end-all in how a woofer will perform. Indeed, they can be quite useful as a guide to help you decide which way to lean when designing your enclosure, but honestly many of the drivers that I carry tend to model strangely, even though they sound great when all things are considered once installed.

An RL-p12 in 1.15 - 1.35 cu ft net volume sealed, fed with 500-800 watts, will sound great regardless of what computer modeling may be showing you. Ported I would suggest 1.5 - 2.0 cu ft net, tuned to 34 Hz for in-car (or 24 Hz for in-home, with 2.0 - 2.4 cu ft net volume), fed with similar power.

If you'd like to discuss your specific environment or just shoot the breeze, drop me a line.

Thanks, Mike, for the (incredibly) fast and helpful response.

I don't doubt real-world results are impressive, since (as you said) modeling software has no way of simulating a listening environment. Plus, with such a sturdy and loyal following, it's clear the drivers have earned their respect and not begged for it by putting spec's in neon lights.

The model graphs just confused me a bit, since they looked quite a bit different than I had expected. Nothing beats the real thing, though.

I will contact you. The offer is much appreciated.

Thanks again.
