SQ.... ported? or sealed?

I have 10w7 in a ported box tuned to 30hz, in a regular cab dodge truck. It seems my system misses alot of the higher bass notes. theres a huge gap in the music, changing the EQ doesnt help much. It'll hit softly then a HUGE rattle at certain notes, doesnt sound very good at all.

Would changing to a downfiring sealed box help it hit more of the lower notes more consistantly? Im looking for really strong SQ bass.

When you have a ported box, unless the box is custom made to have a flat response, you will not have a flat response in a ported enclosure. Tuning lower would just take away more highs, as ported enclosures have a very rapid loss or response starting at about 10 - 15 hz above tuning frequency. It's hard to design a ported enclosure that will offer a flat response over the entire sub stage (20 - 80 zh)

Sealed, on the other hand, more easily will provide a flatter response. Less effiecency of power use from the sub tho, resulting in less output.

For SQ on low notes, tune low (28-30hz max). For a flat response, the easiest and cheapest solution is a sealed box.

But, you can have a ported box play more effiecently through most of the sub range if designed with a flat response in mind.

While this applies to the w7, it does not apply to all subs. There are many subs out there that can be very peaky in sealed boxes and they can seriously lack low end. My IDQ is much flatter in car and in my room in a ported enclosure than it was sealed. It lacked a lot of low end sealed and seemed a bit peaky around the 60-80hz region. With it ported, it's very flat from 35-100hz in room and about 30-80hz in car.

As for the w7, it's not going to have the greatest upper frequency extension, whether ported or sealed, but it will be less boomy sealed.

Looks to be a problem with transition between sub and mids. Try playing with various crossover points for both mids/highs, better gain matching with the two, perhaps phase adjustments, if available. Your car's interior may also contribute to a dead spot in the response.
