Speakers cut out at high volume

I have a Panasonic CQDFX983U head unit which supports 4-8 ohms. I recently put Alpine 6x9's in the rear. When I turn the volume up past a little over half way, the speakers start to cut out but the subs keep playing. What will I need to do to fix this problem?

sounds like the internal amp on the HU is being overdriven or the speaker wiring is shorting out.

I've been told I'm overdriving the HU. Would I need to get an amp for the speakers? How would I go about connecting that?
