Speaker Wire Gauge

Ritht now I have I have 16 gauge speaker wire going to my subs which are 1200watt max 400RMS. What guage wire should I be using for maximum performance from these subs?

I am using a 10 awg wire on my 1200 watt sub so thats what i would go with or 12 awg. Send alot more current for better all around performance.

Im using the 10 gage stuff Radio Shack sells for $1 per foot.
