Speaker mounting to door panel

I need to mount my speakers to the door panel rather than in the door itself because the door panel will not fit over the new speaker and trim ring. I do not want to cut the panel because its a 3000GT and there's not a lot of parts available to restore it back to stock. I took the stock speaker cover off the panel and made a mdf copy of it to mount the speaker to.

My question is does anyone know how I can seal any gap that may exist between the door panel and the door so the speakers performs to their potential. If it matters they are hertz hsk165s.

Been there, done that, and am doing it over because I don't like the results. That being said...

I chose to mount my speakers to a wooden baffle kinda shaped like the original speaker grille and covered it with vinyl. In my case there's carpet on the door panel and I didn't want to destroy that in case I wanted to revert to stock (which I'm doing soon). The "seal" is fair at best.

If you have plastic panels and no carpet I'd use some rubber sheet that would conform to the panel and seal to your baffle. McMaster-Carr is a good source for that sort of thing.
