I drive a 2001 mustang with the mach 460 audio system in it.(Four 2.5" tweeters, and Four 6x8" speakers powered by 2 amps.) The amp for my front speakers died, i bought a new one, and the speakers were blown. I want to rip everything out of the car( i already have a Dual head unit with 3 pre-outs) and install new speakers. My questions: Can i keep the 4 tweeters and just connect them to the head unit somehow? And what type of 6x8 speakers should i buy? I was thinking component ones but i don't know what brand to purchase and what amp i should get to power them. Thanks in advance.

get 6.5 comps and make or buy adaptors for them, get a 4 channel amp to power them. What kind of budget are you working with and what kind of sound are you looking for?

Was looking to spend no more than 400-450, less if possible as always. I want a full range of sound, and a decent amount of bass. Probably going to be adding a pair of subs in a year or two. My factory amps put out 170 wrms for all four of the speakers, and they shook my rear view/side mirrors(the mach 460 system was set up so that the 6x8"s played frequencies less than 300 hz and the 2.5"s played above 300 hz.)

I would suggest hybrid audio, Hertz or morel . Ditch the factory tweeters cause the new ones will blow them away . Not many great speaker options in the factory size that your car has, if you want good sound your going to need to change sizes.

Ditch the Dual HU. No sense in buying $3-400 speakers if you're going to run them off of a HU like that.

For speakers, I'd go with 5.25" components. Mount the mid where the 5x7 used to be and put the tweet in the factory location. For the rears, some boomy co-ax 5x7's will be more than enough. If you're looking for more bass, buy a subwoofer or you'll end up roasting your new speakers cranking the bass-boost up to compensate for a lack of low-end. That may have been what did the speakers in to begin with. The Dual HU probably didn't help manners from a distortion standpoint either.

You don't have to spend a lot on a HU, just get a quality one. I purchased a used Eclipse for $50 with shipping and there's a number of very good HUs out there under $150 if you take your time. Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion, Pioneer, etc. all make nice stuff. Dual? Not so much...
