Space between port and walls

How much room do I need to leave on the inside of the enclosure between the opening of the port and the opposite wall? For example, if the interior dimension is 10", can the port intrude 9"? 5"? Is there a rule of thumb or a minimum distance I need to leave?
Hopefully that makes sense.

Measure any two sides of that triangle. Multiply them. Now divide that answer by 2. Now square root that answer. Then divide that answer by 2. Final answer is your distance from the wall.
