Sound distored when volume is up

Hey guys I recently purchased the Sony XAV-63 for my Hummer H2 and I noticed unfortunately that when I put the sound 3/4 of a way up it is really distorted and sounds terrible.

The head unit specifications are:

52 (peak power output)

17 RMS

Would I need new speakers to handle the wattage? or an amplifier? Or am I missing something all together

Thank you so much for the help I really do appreciate it!

Honestly it depends on how much you are willing to spend. The biggest question is does your Hummer have the BOSE system, if not your in good shape because you dont have to worry about ripping stuff out. The distortion is more than likely coming from the HU maxing out its potential in that little amplifier inside it. You can replace the speakers but you will still get distortion, If you have the cash replace the speakers and get an amp. If not look around for the power pack style amps that give you a true 50 watts and not a peak 50 watts per channel. Then you will be able to turn it up and still have clarity. Will your stock speakers handle it?...probably not the full 50, but keep it moderate valume and see what you think before replacing everything
