Sound Deadeing

I have damp pro also and spectrum and LLP going into the car here soon.. Also going to get some OKP from SS. For my son we used something called r-blox its butyl also and seemed to adhear well with the heatgun. I plan on using the rest of it also along with the SS products.. Must be shit though have never even seen it mentioned here....

R-Blox has always been an asphalt product that claims to be butyl - you should never need a heat gun to install butyl.

I didn't need a heat gun to install it I used one to make sure it stayed on good. I will be spraying Spectrum or Cascade over what I use in my car also..

Is there a chance the r-blox formula has changed or the mat itself? Looking all I can see is that its a butyl type not asphalt type. Maybe its time to stick some on apiece of sheet metal and heat it up to see what it does and at what temps...

Heat does not affect the adhesion of the butyl mats like it did the asphalt mats. Using a heat gun to try and help install a butyl mat would only serve to make the product hot to the touch. In other words, it wouldn't help at all, only make things harder. You said it 'seemed to adhere well with the heat gun'... that's a dead give way you bought asphalt.
r-blox is asphalt based and has not changed recently. Sorry they duped you or your son.

yep def dupped us but I used some of my adhesives for the roofing industry so I am not worried about it falling down. It also did make a significant improvemt over nothing at all... As I said for adhesion the heat gun was not needed. It was cold when we did it so it helped a lot.

If it was butyl, heat wouldn't help one bit. Even if it is was 20 below zero outside.
Heat isn't necessarily needed when installing asphalt mat, it just helps activate the glue and make the over all product more pliable. Again everything you say lends itself to the mat being asphalt, not butyl. Im glad you seem happy with the results though.

Cheers.

Actually it would. If you've ever used butyl tape or rope you'd know that it's just like chewing gum - hard as a rock when cold and nice and soft when warm. You can actually change it's consistency just buy rubbing some in your hands.

When it comes to vibration damper, the more the product can stay consistent across a temperature range, the better. Manufacturers add stuff to the butylene compound to help this. Cascade uses their "secret" ingredient in VMax and I'm sure SS also uses their own. We know that air doesn't freeze, so I'm sure both adjust how much air goes into the mix, too. Search this and you will hear Ant talking about this with regards to adjusting the overall mass of his butylene compound.

The key, it seems, is nailing the perfect state of viscoelasticity. If it's too viscous (water like) it's going to move too much, but this would be good for more broadband performance. If it's too elastic (return to form) than it won't move too much and not damp as well.

Remember also that CLD mat is ONE type of structural damping. One fish in a big sea of possibilities. Q-Tip, Kleenex, and Windex are not your only choices when it comes to cleaning your ears, nose and windows, kids. Don't get suckered by the power Dynamat has over your lateral thinking processes. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I own a large COMMERCIAL roofing company and we use butyl tapes for seams and things like that. Manufactures even have temp ratings for products and also certain temp requirments need to be meet to use it. Having butyl at lower temps compared to higher temps is night and day differences in its plyability.

I'm impressed with my Raamat BXT, especially since I paid $70 for 2rolls:)

I would search craigslist frequently for any of the preferred brands, maybe youll find a steal too. I guess I would take any respectable product depending on price, so keep your options open and look around

r-blox is def asphalt based. I just heated the hell out of and peeled it apart. When I did that and put my nose near it the def smell of asphalt is there. Def going to make sure I coat it a couple times in spectrum and make sure to overlap the r-blox well to get good adhesion from the spectrum and to help seal it up. I do not want that shit falling into any windows. No need to get there msds sheet now, they are liars as to what its constructed of...

There's always a chance - used to be asphalt with a Mylar facing and they claimed it was butyl then. The easiest way to tell is to drop a small piece in a little bit of mineral spirits. If the liquid turns brown, it's asphalt. If it stays clear - sometimes you get black particulates in suspension - it is probably butyl.

Didn't see this before I replied before. Sucks.
