Someone only hooked up one voice coil

I bought some truck boxes w/ 12W6v1's in them. When I took the subs out I found that only one of the voice coils where hooked up like SVC sub even though these are DVC subs.

Will this hurt the sub?

How can I tell if either of the coils are damaged from this?

Thanks,

Opinions vary on this. Some installers will say not to do it, whereas other installers will say that dual voice coils are merely a convenience to offer you more wiring options. Regardless power handling does go down when using 1 of two coils and the TS parameters of the subwoofer will also change when 1 set of the coils is wired up.

A good way to test to see if your other coils are good would be to connect a digital multi-meter and see what kind of DC resistance you get OR hook one set of coils up at a time per subwoofer and play them at LOW volume. Heck even I have done the one set of coils at a time test at low volume without even screwing the subwoofer into the enclosure. It makes for a quick and easy test.

Using only one voice coil will damage the sub in most cases, also all the ts paramaters go out the window when you do that at well.

All you can really do is put a meter on them an hope the coils read close to the same and listen to the sub for any signs of something not working correctly.
