Some help with wire size

I recently got a bunch of stuff for xmas, including an amp installation kit a amp (JBL 1200 rms amp) and some driver. I got a 8gauge wiring kit, i installed everything including 2 12" alpine type R subs. whenever i turn it on, it dos not have the same kick like ive had in the past and the amp just shuts off as soon as it starts to play. I am almost positive everything is set up correctly.

I was just wondering if the 8 gauge wire is hindering me to be able to have the amp working correctly.

key word is "minimum", don't cheap out on this.

haha thank you guys, i ordered some nice 2 gauge wire just cause i figured it would be better and more room for expansion. ill take some pics and show you how it comes out its already looking really nice
