So how bad is it guys??

When you push any tube (round) shape back and forth in a linear motion at some point it "dimples" as you will see with surrounds. When the spider rolls dimple they can crack at those dimple points over time.
You can also damage them with excessively hot lead wires; that is also true. You will see many older "floating lead" woofers would get burn marks / rub marks from those style leads. Leads sewn between spider layers (DD style) or INTO the fabric (TC Style) are also bad for ripping out or cutting spider layers.

The ED spiders are pretty infamous for that as the material is cheap so cannot handle hardly any dimpling before cracking.
So how do you do it?

I really appreciate all the feedback and posts!

That's why I joined up here.

I'd like to educate myself on the different components and nuances of each part and how they work together to create a quality product.

I need a woofer university course //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

So the consensus seems to be it's a bad failure and continuing to run with the torn spider will result in further failure and possible damage to my amp. I don't like that.

What would you do if you were in my shoes guys?

I have my custom box w/ the 12" cut out to accommodate the 13av2 so I can't just put a 12" in there.

I suppose I could have Brian make me an adapter ring for my recessed flush mount box to down size to a 12" woofer.

Is my basket and huge motor a good platform for a rebuild?

What would it cost me ballpark to make this thing into a nice piece of woofage to be proud of?

I didn't pay much for the speaker, is it a good call to use some of my existing parts and build something juicy off of it or would a guy be better off starting over with something new.

I know I'm a new here but I thought this was a pretty decent sub.

Your thoughts?

It is designed to be an SQ sub correct?

Id recone it. Looks like it could be a pretty nice sub.

those TC style spiders where the lead is woven are total garbage! there was missing material for the lead to weave and was a weak link. TC sounds had great motor designs but soo many soft part failures...

We use Nomex for most of our spiders, yes, it's a very durable material. We use some poly cotton as well; a quality poly cotton can do a fine job as well.

We also tied the leads on top of the spiders -- rather than in them, between them, or floating above them.

How Does JL do it? Don't they have a patented method?
