So how do you do it?When you push any tube (round) shape back and forth in a linear motion at some point it "dimples" as you will see with surrounds. When the spider rolls dimple they can crack at those dimple points over time.
You can also damage them with excessively hot lead wires; that is also true. You will see many older "floating lead" woofers would get burn marks / rub marks from those style leads. Leads sewn between spider layers (DD style) or INTO the fabric (TC Style) are also bad for ripping out or cutting spider layers.
The ED spiders are pretty infamous for that as the material is cheap so cannot handle hardly any dimpling before cracking.
