Smell coming from ported boxes?

i have a kx1200.1 and two cvr15d4's in a ported box and there is a strange smell coming from the vents when i put the volume up to a good level of sound. my friend said those are the voice coils working too hard but i am not overpowering my subs for a fact because they handle 500rms each and my bass boost nor my gain are turned up all the way, what can i do about this?

^_^

If they are brand new, that might be some extra glue burning off that got somewhere it shouldn't. That would be normal. If they aren't new, you are exceeding their thermal limits; you might be clipping them.

Just because you are not overpowering them does not mean you can not damage them... You could possibly be clipping the amplifier, putting a large strain on the sub; this is not good. The smell is probably the glue on the voice coils burning off before they actually reach their thermal limits. Get yourself a DMM and set your gain properly, and turn the bass boost off. You have some nice equipment there, now just make it last. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

what is the enclosure made of. if it is MDF or any other fiber board it could be the glue used in manufacturing. the pressure from the subs could be expanding the wood allowing the fumes from the wood to escape which is why you only smell it when you turn it up. i wouldn't worry to much about it until you start hearing the sub bottom out. ive know a few people to confused that smell with fried voice coils

just because the gain and bass boost arent up all the way doesnt mean you arent sending full power and even clipping to the subs... where are they set at? that amp is also stronger than it says it is.

i don't remember what exactly i put them up to but the gain is 2 under the max and the bass boost is 1 under the max, right now i am going to have to take out my backseat to get to my amp and i will turn the bass boost to only half, does this sound like a good idea?

i never turn mine more than half way...unless your really under powering them i would do 75% at the most

You can not guess where an amp will put out its full RMS power, max gain does not mean that you amp is pushing the full RMS that it rated to do. You should set your gain properly with a DMM or even better an O scope.
