slot port questions

I am building a 3.25 cube box for a 12" kicker L7 and the recommended port in the instruction manual would be tuned at 41hz (if my math is correct). Should I make the port longer and tune it lower to say 30-35hz? Will the actual shape of the port have any effect on the sound or is it just the area of the port?

Well I want it to be loud and sound good. Im not really looking to put it in every competition I come across, its for an everyday driver. I listen to a huge range of music from old school rap to hardcore metal. I really wanna get the most potential out of the sub I can (which would be why im putting it a huge ported box) but I dont want to be limited to what I can listen to at a reasonably high volume. I dont wanna listen to test tones all day...

3.5 cube sounds a bit small, but 41 tuning should be fine for normal ground pounding. Longer would be lower but you start to get some impractical lengths to tune low particularly in small boxes. As for shape a lot of people make them L shaped to fit around a corner, ideally you'll do something to round it off where it bends, but I've done with just right angles with fine results.
