Skoda Superb SQ Setup

Hey mates,

this is my first post on this forum, so please bear with me.

what im looking for is a good sq install, the kind of music i listen ranges from, full-on psytrance/ dark / ambient to old school rock n roll, metal, grunge, pop mostly everything except hip-hop/rap or the likes

my current setup is:

alpine 9887

rainbow slc kicks 2way bi-amped to rainbow kraftwerk 4channel amp

image dynamics idQ 12" in a sealed box powered by some lame class d amplifier

what im looking for is not an upgrade but the end of the line, im tired of auditioning and reading reviews of various components, amps, subs, etc.

i've been saving since long so money is not an issue(dont think im a millionaire kid, its all hard earned money)

what i've decided so far is:

HU- pioneer dex-p99rs

Amplifier- ill keep my rainbow amp for now, maybe power my idq through it

Subwoofer- keeping the idq

what i need is a new set of components, might get horns for tweeters too and a new amp for the components.

plz do suggest whatever u feel should match with my listening tastes and the HU, sub and amp

thanks

hmm. Horns sound very good if you have an EQ to help tame them some. I'm using a set of B&C de500's mated to a set of ID horn bodies (this is the cd-2 neo ID sells, dont' let them fool you lol). That and a high effeciency midbass to keep up would be a great setup for any type of music. I find my car sounds very good on club music since it tends to be heavy on the midbass. Rock also sounds good for this reason, but honestly, everything is nice usually lol. The only things that tend to sound bad is poorly recorded music, mostly rap and some some pop and rock, depends on the artist. Anyway a high effeciency setup can get alot louder than any regular car audio style speaker, which helps take away some of the upgradeitis. What size mids are you looking to run? 6.5's, 8's?

Honestly my current front stage while not perfect is at the level of not needing an upgrade for 99.9% of the population. My mids are XS69's (image dynamics). I've never had anyone set in my car after a demo and not be very impressed, even people who are into audio. You simply can't match the overall clarity and realism of high effeciency speakers with a 86db/1w/1m speaker, I don't care if focal makes it and it costs 4k, you just can't...

hey mate

one of my brother's friend has the same combo, i.e. ID xs midbass paired with Id-horns(dont know which ones), and boy they sound terrific, the one thing disappointing about the XS is that music recorded at a low bit rate sounds awful, like really awful

since i listen to psy-trance most of the time, its really hard to get audio cd's and mostly all my songs are either 320kbps or 192-256VBR

now thats something the genesis absolute speakers can play very well, throw anything at them and they play it well (im not saying it sounds like an audio cd altogether, but way better than most of the speakers i've heard)

i'll be getting 6.5inchers as they'll fit my stock location well

also, what sub/amp/hu are u running?

boom

Are there any good bang-for-buck high efficiency drivers that would complement 110db/w/m horns well? I guess the better question would be, are there any midbass drivers with an efficiency of over 100db/w/m? I noticed the ID's you have are good at 92, but I'm talking twice as loud with the same power (10db rise).

not that will play midbass as well, no. To get high effeciency, as in 100db/1w/1m you need a very light amount of moving mass. Light mass means high fs so the driver rolls off sooner, also you need a very short coil, so low xmax as a result. If you want your fronts to be able to play down to 80hz at least, you'll want 5-8mm of xmax and on a 8inch mid your pretty much not going to get over 96db/1w/1m. However, you do get more powerhandling with a mid than you do a small compression driver that actually fits into a car. The mids I'm upgrading to from the xs mids are BMS NS515's. They are 96db/1w/1m with 5mm of xmax. That's basically the ID drivers, but at leaste 4db's more sensative, possibly 7, IDK how ID rates their mids. 1 watt at 4 ohms is 2 at 8.... Anyway the mids I have now can handle 200 watts continously. AES ratings on pro audio mids are no joke, that's actual power that won't break it on music. A single mid is 96db/1w/1m, even with a few decibels of power compression a single driver with 200 watts will gain another 20db's due to power increasing from 1 watt to 200. that's already 116db's, plus 6 more for the second driver. 122's at 1m, a car is usually less than 3 feet away so maybe

124ish? If you need more than 124db's of continous output, your either deaf or you will be VERY soon. Most concerts are 110-120db's depending how far out you are, mid crowd is still low 120's so your well over even LOUD rock concert volume.

Anyway you can get midrange in an 8 that will be 100db/1w/1m, but they won't play any lower than 300hz as xmax will only be maybe 2mm to keep the moving mass low enough to keep effeciency high, so then you'll need to do a 3 way setup and still won't get 100db/1w/1m midbasses lol, unless you can fit 12 or 15inch mids somewhere....

How much do you want to spend on midbass drivers and what sizes and I can help you too lol. There are alot of good pro audio midbasses out there at any price range. The mids I'm using are easily among the best for my application and cost 300.25 shipped to my door. I got my xs mids from a team member at ID for 250 IIRC.

For a headunit I'm using an alpine w200 and a alpine h701 for processing. Very nice combo as it's very easy to use and i have a double din slot in my car stock. Once I get rid of my AI-net and get my optical cable hooked up my noise issues should be gone. Honeslty, the noise floor in my car is good, I'm just anal, you can't hear it with music, just when you mute it and turn it up. Also the focal disks can expose it due to their VERY dynamic nature and low recorded volume level, I've never heard it on normal music though.

You said you want to use your stock door location, any idea how much depth that gives you? PA mids can be kinda deep sometimes.

My subs are Acoustic Elegance AV15's. Very nice subs. I chose them because they modelled very well ported when it came to integrating when you include cabin gain in pretty small enclosures, about 2.5-3 cubes net. Also they have a stupidly low inductance and can play very high. That's nice with pro audio mids since you get a dimished low end slightly due the higher effeciency. Plus, if your into high effeciency you probably like your music to be loud, so running your mids low is NEVER good from a sq perspective, especially in a 2-way.
