simple car sound system

I have been thinking lately about my car audio, its louder than my friends' stock systems...but it is still stock..which makes me know that it can be louder. i was wondering if anyone could tellme what i will need to get a economical(not super expensive) louder system.

WHat kind of money am i lookin at spending? What brands to buy? that sort of thing.

sorry if this is a retarted question.

I know nothing about car audio at all.

Also, where would i put this? I drive a 04 mustang, convertable...not much room anywhere for to put speakers and stuff...

Wow you have alot to learn. Lets see New headunit 50-over $1000 front stage components 50-over $12,000(hehe rainbowreference) sub 50-over $1000 and then you would need amps to power them all. If you want economical go with coaxial speakers that could be run off of a new headunit and a 12" sub in a ported box with amp

Also, how much would simply adding subs add to the sound? I have heard and read a few places that adding subs puts less strain on the speakers to allow for better quality in the upper ranges.

thanks in advance.

Well you can't simply add subs. 99% of the time you will need to buy an amp on top of buying the sub. Adding subs will put less strain on your component speakers by not having them play lower frequencies (60 hz and below).

Do you have the Mach speakers in your mustang, or are they just basic (not premium)?

i have the mach speakers. Not horrible.

They are not bad sounding, definetly not as good as a simple aftermarket upgrade, but is it really worth the money. If you are looking for all sound quality yeah upgrade. If you are just wondering how a stock system could sound better than your friends aftermarket, keep your current ones.

To add a subwoofer, you are going to need to add an amp.

A good combo is type-r with 4/500 watts of power. That could be bought online for about 225-275$. Wiring kit for $50. Have a friend help you with the labor. So essentially just getting subs could cost under $300 and will sound great.
