i believe the bars you speak of are the torsion bars that hold up the trunk lid.

they can be removed but then you trunk lid wont stay open by itself any more.

but if you do remove them, be careful!!! they are pretty **** strong.

i almost got whacked in the head with the pry bar i was using to remove one of mine.

oh and if you want a 17" height, i think you'll need to get rid of those bars. I believe i can only get 16" of height w/ them in.
