got a T.M.A. 2 channel amp bridged to power my 10"alpine type-r. RMS rating for the amp is 360 watts at 4ohms, got my sub wired into 4ohms so it is only getting 360 watts out of 500 RMS. gain is set at 3/4 and bass is turned all the way down to zero on the amp, not at the head unit. as for the crossover i dont know were to set it cause it goes from 50hz up to 500hz(not good at all at fine tuning). when played it gets hot, not too hot to touch but gets close, should it do this? got good ground and good power, have yet to play it long enough to see if it goes into protect.

A sub amp getting hot is normal-- it just shows that the heatsink is doing its job, taking heat from the inside and radiating it outside. Now, if it were to get very hot to the touch, you may have a problem. 3/4 does seem a bit high on the gain

When i got home from work(about 20-25min) i touched the amp and it was too hot to touch. it ain't going into protect so i am assuming it isn't getting too hot for the amp yet.

you have a dual 2 ohm sub?
Yeah its a dual 2ohm sub and i'll change the xover to 80hz. Is there a way i can set it up so i don't work the amp too hard, I.E. turn the gain down to say 1/4-1/2 and turn the bass up on just the HU and not the amp?

If it's a higher end HU it should have a sub out feature, which should be all the way up when you set the gain. Any EQ or bass boost features should be turned off.

Also if you have really low preamp voltage you may want to consider a line driver.

i have a pioneer deh-4000ub headunit. it has 3 4 volt pre amp outputs, one is for the sub which is what the RCA's are plugged into. now should i have all the subwoofer settings all the way up and the equalizer and bass boost turned all the way down on the HU. tried with EVERYTHING flat on the HU and the gain set to 3/4 and bass boost all the way up and there was hardly any bass coming from the sub and i don't want the gain turned up all the way, feel there should be no need.

I dont know anything about your amp but i know my older orion 225's run hot.. really hot. Everyone ive ever owned ran hot. Somtimes i think i could fry an egg on those things.

Is it a class A/B amplifier? Those naturally run on the warm side due to their poor efficiency. Even so, my Class D Viper 1200.1 runs very hot after being pushed for 15 minutes during the hottest part of the day. I've only had it go into thermal protect once, after I was playing it hard for over an hour.

If it isn't going into protect, I wouldn't worry too much. KC summers are rather hot, and your amplifiers are going to be warm even before you turn them on.

wtf?
yea.... i noticed that for the 1st. time about ten minutes ago......i think everyone gets the point now so i won't bother changing it.

As for the wiring i was looking around to see what THE BIG 3 was and once i figured it out i might know another problem.....I relocated my battery to the trunk and have 2 guage power wire going to the front then to a distribution block from there it goes to the starter and fuse block. as for the ground, from the battery to the trunk, its just a 8 guage as well, maybe 6? definatly need to change that, but could the battery ground wire cause this effect or any real effect on a 360 watt system? Really in the end not too concerned, its never gone into protect and i only listen to it on average for 20-30 minutes at a time, at that point i am approaching my distination, just not for sure if i should be concerned because a buddy said that no amp should ever get hot, maybe warm if that.

but i do have 2/0 gauge so i guess i can hook that up to the amp......no not really, too big a wire for the amp but i do have 4 guage power wire but the ground will still have to be 8 for now.

but just to double check on settings: subwoofer setting all the way up but equalizer(for the lows) stayes flat. i got a pioneer HU so i have direct subwoofer controls, not just high, mid, low equalizer.

i think this shows it pretty well on how its wired

Its not good to under power a sub. alpines can handle more then they say. you should get a higher rated amp so it doesn't strain to keep up with your sub, if your worried about overheating.

sorry if you saw my post b4 the edit. your diagram confused me and i ddnt see the jumper cable.

i figured i'm pushing the amp pretty hard. eventually i wanna throw another 10 in the mix and then switch to a better amp but that won't be until sometime down the road so this amp will have to do for now, no since in buying another amp........well there are always reasons to buy another amp provided its working........

come on man, why would it hurt to underpower a sub.

also if ur gonna change to 4 gauge, u gotta do both power and ground, cant do one or the other
